 UK Assyriology Student receives the 2008 AAS scholarship

The Assyrian Academic Society selected Mr. Nineb Lamassu, of London, England as the recipient of its 2008 scholarship award. Mr. Lamassu is currently studying at the School of Oriental and African Studies in the department of Ancient Near East and has recently returned from an excavation mission at Ziyaret Tepe, in Turkey, and Sofia Bulgaria where he presented a paper “Gilgamesh’s Plant of Rejuvenation and Qatine’s Sisisamber” at the Melammu Conference . In addition to his graduate work, Mr. Lamassu has published numerous poems, articles, as well as co-authored a modern Assyrian-Aramaic phrase book. Nineb is married to Shoshan Lamassu and has a 6 year old son, Firodil. Congratulations to Mr. Nineb Lamassu.

In Spirit of UNESCOs proclamation of 2008 as the year of languages the AAS has partnered with Iraqi Nineveh Plains major towns on the Sponsor a Street Sign project.

Now you can sponsor the fabrication and installation of a street sign in one or more of the major towns with both Arabic and Aramaic.
Your contribution will have a long lasting impact on the promotion of Assyrian Aramaic language and culture.

Once your tax deductible donation is received a certificate will be sent to you acknowledging your sponsorship and the street name you contributed towards.
This drive will end by January 2009, so do not delay. Take part of this historical task.

Dr. Donny George. Professor at the Department of Anthropology at Stony Brook University in New York. Former Chairman of the Iraqi State Board of Antiquities and Heritage.



Dr. Edward Y. Odisho. Professor in the Department of Teacher Education at Northeastern University and formerly an adjunct professor at Loyola University, Chicago. Dr. Odisho was also the founder of the Assyrian Academic Society and JAAS.



Dr. Michael Abdalla, Professor at the University of Agriculture in Poznan, Poland. He is also a member at the Chair of Oriental Studies in the Faculty of Neophilology in the Adam Mickiewicz University.



Dr. John C. Michael, Ophthalmology Surgeon and CEO of the Retina institute of Illinois. Former president of the Assyrian Academic Society.



Dr. Ninwe Maraha, Graduate of the Karolinska Institute of Laboratory Medicine, Stockholm, Sweden. Former president of the Assyrian Federation of Sweden and editor of Hujada Magazine. Dr. Maraha is also a member of the Editorial board of Nineveh Magazine.
